EMMAS DESIGNBLOGG

Design and style from a Scandinavian perspective

Monday Mix

After my post on the overly glamourous facade of design blogs, a minor storm cooked up in the Swedish design blogosphere. It all started with this post written by Frida at Trendenser, where she totally misinterpreted the whole discussion and made it into something completely different, and then her readers starting making lots of posts telling everyone how they don't want to see dirty dishes on design blogs. As if someone ever suggested that? If you are one of those people who thinks this discussion is about posting ugly stuff, please read this post, and understand that it is all about showing your more human side, not about showing bad photos of your messy home.

I added the instagram widget here on my blog, not to make things uglier, but to give you a glimpse of my everyday life, since I never post about that. If you think those photos are totally apalling, you don't have to look. I will still be posting lots of wonderful, stylish photos here like I have always done, and have no intention of showing those iphone photos anywhere else than in that little grid in the side bar.

Since that discussion got out of hand, I kind of lost my desire to blog... But I can't just leave you all hanging like that, so here is a little mix of what caught my eye over at Pinterest for the last few days. Enjoy!

Hi Emma. Your biggest blog fan from South Africa here. I just want to lend my support. I totally understood and respect what you said and also find myself looking at photos thinking who live like that. It is almost like looking at models on the cover of fashion magazines and wondering, thinking to yourself it is not humanly possible to look like that. I love your blog and now the personal touch as well. The English designer Paul Smith said the best looking house is one where you can see people are living there and it is not a museum. Keep up the good work your blog is great!

Hej Emma! I'm afraid to tell you'.

Ur ursprungsinlägget finns bland annat det här citatet (som faktiskt gjorde mig lite bedrövad): "Instead of visiting a blog and feeling inspired, we quite often leave feeling less than, and like our life can never really match up to what we see."

To give your readers a glimpse of your everyday life is a good thing I think, no matter what kind of blog you write. It's you as a person, no matter how messy you are or how undone your home looks like, that is the interesting thing. Your style, your taste, what you choose to show us.

And there always has to be room for interpretation from the reader, which a blog is all about. It's in the eyes of the reader where the opinion if its beautiful or ugly, lies! So you and I as bloggers just have to do our thing - how everyday-ish or styled it may be and hope that the readers will follow. Which, ofcourse, they will, since it's you (and just like you are) that they want to follow, through your blog! Keep it up! :)

I love your blog, too. A little mess is proof that we exist. Otherwise interiors would just be an installation or exhibit. Good design isn't in the neat installation but in how well it stands up to our lives. Please, keep giving us glimpses into yours.

Dear Emma, I believe blogging is about posting what you love, what really makes you smile, what triggers your interest in an open and shut your eyes. It is about you, your style, your taste. And that is great! No matter of how and where you live. Keep on going with what you do because if we follow you, it´s because we love your eye.

On the other hand, I understand that from time to time, it is a challenge to post the so called "perfect world" and I liked it a lot when you dipped into new topics such as some food styling pics. Again, that is your great taste.

And you can be damned proud of it!

( So, forget about other opinions , that has nothing to do with you but with another bloggers´ misinterpretations!!). xx Gudy

i'm reminded of a post on another design blog .... forgive me but i can't remember it exactly. it was tour of an apartment with many curiosities, thrifted finds, and lots of art all over the walls. some of the comments were just not very nice, and i think those people just missed the point.

everyone's home is their own. how they decorate and how they live may not be for others or for the cover of a magazine. but it's theirs.

do what you love - put art all over the walls or leave the walls blank. fill your home with anqitues or with modern pieces. have children, pets, books, bicycles, toys, and whatever else you love. or leave everything bare.

the choice is yours and if you love it, no one else has to be a fan.

    Hi Emma,

I too have been thinking about this issue a lot lately. As a sometimes stylist and designer, I feel a similar pressure for everything to be perfect, perfect, perfect and it just isn't sustainable! I recently watched "Eames: the Architect and Painter" (streaming on Netflix right now) and was completely delighted to see the lived-in interiors of their home and offices and how they combine their gorgeous furniture with real life ephemera and working projects. There is always a place for wonderfully styled images, but I love seeing the layers of patina that come with artfully living in a space. Keep up the beautiful work - I love your blog!
