Villa Vals, or a hole in the mountain

I found Villa Vals in the latest issue of RUM, and had to google it to find some pictures online that I could share with you. Villa Vals is far from your ordinary Swiss alp cabin, this is something completely different! Architect group SeARCH worked together with Christian Müller Architects and asked themselves "Shouldn’t it be possible to conceal a house in an Alpine slope while still exploiting the wonderful views and allowing light to enter the building?". I would say the answer is YES!
Villa Vals was originally built as a private holiday home, but now you can book a vacation for yourself in this hole in the wall, mountain wall that is, and enjoy skiing and thermal baths in the Alps while staying in this amazing house.

    Helt otroligt!

Jag bodde 10 år i Schweiz och är väldigt svag för deras arkitektur. De kan konsten att ta det ett steg längre men ändå stanna kvar i traditionen. Otroliga bilder och en bra blogg!!

This is a great idea. I love the utilitarian feel of the concrete interior.

However, what about when it snows? It looks like the front would just fill up with snow. Also: I do see some sort of fence but if a snow drift was high enough wouldn't it spill over the top edge?

Did you already post about the famous Therme in Vals? If not you should. It is a fantastic piece of architecture of Peter Zumthor and similar to this chalet with a clean interior. Highly recommended for a long relax weekend!!!

And thanks to rest of you for your sweet comments!

Tor, I have no idea how they have solved the snow issue, but I'm sure they have. The Swiss building regulations are very strict, so it's all approved by the authorities.

This is great! Does any one else know where I can find some swanky pictures of earthships or passive solar homes? I really want to build one but am looking for some inspiration to get me started. Most earthships I have found look like trash heaps (I guess they are, actually) and I'm trying to find an eco-friendly yet sleek, non-star wars looking earthships.
