IKEA PS 2009 collection

I was invited to IKEA's press event for the new PS collection today, and may I say I'm pleasantly surprised? The new collection consists of 70 products, and most of them would be more than welcome in my home! The inspiration for all of these was found in Sweden's traditions and nature, and the colors and materials were chosen accordingly, with lots of wood and wool in white, black and red. The IKEA PS 2009 collection will be available in three selected stores in Sweden on February 1, and in all other stores in April. I'll show you some of my personal favorites below:

Svarva, by Front, one of Sweden's most interesting young design groups. Here they have worked with turned wood, cut into little pieces to add flexibility and life to this reading light.

Karljohan, a low stool or side table, inspired by a common Swedish mushroom, here made from solid wood (availabe in birch or pine).

Bruse, a bench or sofa table that looks as if it was made from solid wood, but is in fact a hollow plywood box covered with veneer on top and rough left over pices from the wood industry on the sides. This makes every bench unique, just like the designer's grandfather's bench that was the original inspiriation for the piece.

Sticka, a big blanket or bedspread, in a lovely warm wool/polyester blend. The long handquilted stitches decorating it gives this blanket that personal touch I'm so in to right now. This is also available in offwhite with coloured stitches.

Fjällbjörk, in Swedish this is called a kåsa, but I don't think there is an English word for this kind of mug, usually used on nature treks. It's great for hot and cold beverages, soup and even solid foods, and the handle is especially practical when you want to scoop up water from a creek. It comes from the Sami culture, the Scandinavian version of the Native Americans. And since I am part Sami, this piece has a special place in my heart, and I'm real happy to have recieved this as a gift at the press show! Traditionally made from wood, and with plastic versions used in schools and daycare groups all over Sweden, this is an upgrade in fine white porcelain.

And below, some more good pieces:

Spraka, peppermill

Såga chair and Kvarnsten dining table

Sinka cabinet and Pendel clock/shelf

August day bed

thanks for the preview.
will look forward to seeing this range in France hopefully :)

wow - thanks for the preview. so innovative.

Lampan är helt underbar!

I like these a lot! Do you know when these will be available? I'm looking for a new round dining room table...

The Sinka cabinet is beautiful!

Oooh so much to love! The Svarva lamp is gorgeous, and the Sinka cabinets are pretty damn awesome too. Fingers crossed they find their way into IKEA stores around the world!

thanxs a lot for sharing this preview!!

thanks , great stuff ;)

Hmm...I wonder if these products will make it to the US stores by February or April? Thanks for the teaser.

WOW. I'm totally floored.

I think I want everything!!! Especially that blanket.

Anna: Yes, the blanket is definitely on my list of what to buy next time I go to Ikea. It's lovely, soft and thick.

Lindsay: from what I heard, the products will be in all Ikea stores in April. But I'm not absolutely sure they meant internationally, so I can't promise anything.

Iris: The new PS collection will be in three selected stores in Sweden (Älmhult, Barkarby, Kungens Kurva) on Feb 1, and in the rest of the stores in April.

Catalogue launch is in August, but they will probably pre-launch the PS collection. That said, not everything will be in every region's range. They usually focus on EU and then the US/Canada, but in Canada, some of the stores are smaller (like the one I worked at) and do not get the complete range. Nonetheless, it is a lovely collection!

Do we know if the Bruse bench (or sofa table) comes in a darker wood version? I like the idea, as an alternative to the often unaffordable wood "slab" table, but most of my wood is dark...

Nikki: No, it only comes in that beech color unfortunately.

I am very proud of this collection! It tells a fantastico story about IKEA roots, Sweden as well as being contemporary, understandable by the many too!
Can't wait to see it for real!

That blanket is definitely coming home with me and that bench??..... Do you know how long it is?

D: I have the catalog at my boyfriends place, so I'll have to get back to you regarding the measurements next week. By the way, you mean the Bruse bench right?

Hello Emma!

Here is István from Hungary.
I've seen the new PS collection's press preview on the web and I really like the products.

May I ask something?

Did you get any brochure about the collection?

Please, if you have time, send me an e-mail.

Many thanks.

Have a nice day.

Best greetings, István

wow, thanks for sharing, these pieces are great I love the kabinet and clock, I hope they will be for sale in Holland too.....

Wow, some really great pieces. Nicoletta - I guess you really nailed the collection there.
The lamp is fabulous, as is the peppermill (yes, I do have a thing for turned wood :-) so very retro, I know), but the stool and the daybed are lovely, too. I like the idea of the bookcase/clock. I bet that is one item that's going to turn up in the design mags... As I usually go to Ikea HQ (the int. concept store in Delft) I hope I'll be able to lay my hands on these soon!

D: The Bruse bench is 150 cm x 46 cm, and 36 cm high.

i love the Såga chair. the dimensions just look so right and slightly scaled down.

Spraka and Sinka - ahhh...

oh i want them all! If only I had a bigger home... and didn't live in the US where we're not getting this line anytime soon. :(

Hello,
I wonder if you are able to assist me.
I saw that you mentioned something on the link on Google to your website on blankets inspired by Sami tradition. I am writing a book at the moment and is specifically looking for information on Sami blankets. Please can you send me any information that you may have at hand. I will really appreciate it. Regards

Dear Emma

Did you see the "dandelion" pendant lamp at the launch? I don't see it on the website, but have read about it. Do you know when that will be available in the US?

Thanks and best regards

thanks for the intro. to new things at Ikea.
I went to check one more time on your guide to Stockholm (going this summer) but it seems to have vanished. I was able to see it once before and can't wait.
thanks again,
Roberta
